Virginia Food Photographer's Journey Begins

I have been thinking a lot on what direction I want to take this blog. I know I want to showcase work I have been doing, and start doing personal projects but that’s where I got stuck. What projects do I want to do? What story do I have to tell? I started going down the rabbit hole of who cares? I would just be another food blogger, what do I have to lend to that genre? I’m not a recipe developer.

I pondered on this for awhile, watching videos from other successful photographers, soaking up the knowledge. I was lead to a great TED Talk video (this one) and started thinking about my why. Why do I love doing food photography, what is my philosophy?

First of all I LOVE color, but that isn’t unique to me. I love how many textures and combinations food can bring. Again, not really that unique to me. I love how food can hold stories and memories. Then it hit me, my love of food and the variety it brings comes from my mother.

My Lovely Mother

My Lovely Mother

She was an amazing cook, chef quality no doubt! She would read cookbooks like novels, and she always loved exploring new cuisines. It’s because of this I don’t have a favorite food, although cheese might be the closest thing to that. Unfortunately we lost her to cancer in 2002. Even though she is no longer with us, her cooking prowess lives on through her kids, who all have a knack for cooking. I would be confident in saying that I am the least adept compared to my siblings.

I found my why, I found my story that I can share with whoever wants to look and listen! While a good amount of people find inspiration from their parents or another loved one, which I admit made me hesitate about using her as inspiration. Yet no one has my mother as inspiration, and I am excited to share the gift that she gave us. A passion for food and all its variety. I also want to get BETTER at cooking so I will not only be making her recipes, but also my personal exploration of food (like this yellow curry).
